Mark Funkhouser

Mark Funkhouser is the former mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, where he served one four-year term from May 1, 2007 until May 2, 2011. He serves as the publisher of Governing magazine.

Mark Funkhouser is the Publisher of Governing magazine. Previously, he was mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, from 2007 to 2011, a position to which he was elected after serving as that city’s Auditor for 18 years. During his tenure, Funkhouser relied heavily on his expertise in public finance to lead the city from the brink of bankruptcy back to fiscal health.

He is also the author of the blog, “Bring on the Funk,” and the book, Honest, Competent Government: The Promise of Performance Auditing.

Mark holds a BA from Thiel College, an MSW from West Virginia University, an MBA from Tennessee State University, and an interdisciplinary PhD in public administration and sociology from the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
